Former Congressman Peter Hoekstra, who helped restore some stability to the tumultuous Michigan Republican Party this year as the new chairman, has been nominated ambassador to Canada.
'In my second term, Pete will help me once again put America first, " Trump said in a statement posted on X. "He did an outstanding job as United States Ambassador to the Netherlands during out first four years, and I am confident that he will continue to represent our country well in this new role."
Hoekstra, 71, took over the state GOP chairmanship earlier this year, replacing Kristina Karamo, whose short lived reign was marked by chaos and resistance from key GOP donors.
He served in Congress from 1993 to 2011 and was the chairman of the House Intelligence Committee from 2004 to 2007.
In 2010, he ran for governor but lost out in the Republican primary to Rick Snyder.
In 2012, he lost in his U.S. Senate bid to Democrat Debbie Stabenow.
Honored for the opportunity to serve. Thank you, Mr. President! https://t.co/XnOCJ0gXeF
