Council President Mary Sheffield
If you believe in the importance of first impressions, Detroit Council President Mary Sheffield did it right when she officially announced her run for mayor on Dec. 10 with a big blow out party at the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local Union 58 on Abbott Street in Detroit's Corktown neighborhood.
Detroit Free Press investigative columnist M.L. Elrick reports in his Sunday column that her campaign finance reports show she spent up to $26,000 for "her mayoral debutante's ball."
The money comes from her campaign war chest, which seems to have quite a bit.
Elrick writes:
If — and I promise this is the last "if" for now — you were worried Sheffield spent her last dollar to host an epic event, you can relax. The City Council president reported that she had $467,852 on hand as of Dec. 31.
That sizable sum puts Sheffield far ahead of the rest of the pack, each of whom reported more than $100,000 in the bank at the end of 2024.
