
Gary Lansky
Gary Lansky, 74, was sentenced Thursday in Wayne County Circuit Court to 7 to 15 years in prison for slashing a seven-year-old girl’s throat with a pocket knife in 2024 at a park on Detroit’s west side.
Last month, he pleaded guilty but mentally ill to assault with intent to murder and felonious assault. The girl received stitches and has since recovered.
The girl is of Arabic descent, but authorities said after the incident that there was no evidence suggesting a hate crime.
The incident happened on Oct. 8, 2024, around 3:45 p.m. at Ryan Park in the 5800 block of Greenview Avenue near Ford Road and the Southfield Freeway. The girl had been with her 73-year-old grandmother.
Saida Mashrah,7, told Fox 2 after the incident:
"A guy came up to me. He pulled my face up and then in the other hand was a knife. He just came out of nowhere and slid the knife on me."
Lansky was arrested later that day.
