Jason Benetti, the chatty, glib announcer for the Detroit Tigers who frequently makes pop culture references, is taking on some additional duties.

NBC Sports announced Wednesday that Benetti, 42, has been hired to handle the play-by-play for the new Sunday Night Baseball primetime package on NBC and Peacock. He'll still do his Tigers gig.

“After Jason finished the 2022 baseball season with us, we told him that if we ever got MLB back, he’d be our first call,” said Sam Flood, NBC Sports executive producer, in a statement. “Jason is one of the best play-by-play announcers in the business, and we’re thrilled to have him back on a full-time basis with NBC Sports, beginning with Sunday Night Baseball.”

From 2016 to 2023, he was the play-by-play announcer for the Chicago White Sox. He was hired to do the Tigers' broadcasts in late 2023.

In addition to regular duties with the White Sox, in 2021, Benetti was the play-by-play announcer for NBC's coverage of baseball at the 2020 Summer Olympics. In 2022, he did play-by-play for NBC's Sunday baseball games.

From 2022 to 2026, he also worked on the side for Fox Sports, calling college football, basketball and Major League Baseball.

He earned a degree from the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University and graduated from Wake Forest University School of Law in 2011.
